Hiatus
It was inevitable really. I have nothing to write and this place needs a re-vamp. I shall return. This place needs to be better.

Your current surroundings: Discuss
I am sat in a crowded office. Nineteen desks in one room with no space for any more. The high windows coated in reflective film to repel the heat from the sun succeed only in darkening our environment to the point where we squint through the light from the fluorescent tubes above, like rabbits caught in the headlights. Next to me, Caroline builds her daily sandwich with a smattering of chicken and onion, held together with lashings of extra light mayonnaise. The mayo is so white as to arouse suspicion over its ingredients and the smell of raw red onion fills the air.
Across the room Lesley contemplates contracting an infectious disease from Stuart's baby in order to secure time off from the job that she hates. She is taking a break from flicking rubber bands at an oblivious Jill who appears to think the sky is falling in. No one is typing - everyone is talking. The long shelves with ringbinders traversing the walls at either end of the office hint at the work we are not doing.

Thinking of London
I hadn't posted about the terrible events of last Thursday because I didn't think to do so at first, and then later I couldn't think what to write. What can anyone who wasn't in the city say at such a time? Today, London is trying to restore some normality and we all sit and wait for the final death toll, news on those who are missing and whether the police have yet worked out exactly what happened. Thankfully, I don't know anyone who was killed or injured in the bombings, but a great many haven't been as lucky.

Wave hello
When I was looking for a new phone to add to my Christmas list, I came across the Nokia 3220 which came (apparently) with 'wave messaging'. Now, as explained before on this blog, I only really use my phone for sending text messages. I call from it occasionally and receive calls occasionally, but 99% of its usage involves the short messaging service. This means that I have always been a little stuck when choosing a new phone as I don't need or want 3G, a camera or MMS. This crazy and pointless feature from Nokia helped me make up my choice, however.I don't need the camera on the phone as I carry a better camera practically everywhere I go anyway, and I was horrified to discover that the grips on the sides of the phone have flashing lights inside them which go off whenever you receive a message or call. However, this was all meaningless next to the feature that would allow me to write things in the air with my phone... just think of the photographic possibilities! So, Topper bought me the phone for Christmas (thanks again!) only for us to discover that the wave messaging feature required a different clip on cover. One that wasn't yet available.
Over six months later and I've finally located a cover. Gives my phone a bit of a fat arse and makes it look a bit red (will be obvious it's mine then), but it works. Parm tried taking some shots of it in the pub last week, and so I thought I'd have a go myself last night. Not bad from the little Ixus on a self-timer, I thought. It may be grainy and out of focus, but I quite like that. Long exposures, here I come!

All change please!
I'm sorry, I just can't take it any more. Much as I love getting genuine comments, I really really hate getting spam comments and I am getting hundreds of the things a day now. I don't have the time or the patience to update my blacklist as often as seems necessary, or to sift through the messages that aren't caught in order to bin them and add their stinking putrid URLs to my list. So that's it. Comments are off the menu for the time being, until I can work out what on earth I want to do with this crumbly old site. Thanks to everyone who has commented over the past two years - I hope you will still continue to read. And if you still want to keep in touch, try emailing 'contactlori' at a Google webmail type thingy (if you know what I mean).
Also... this Saturday, come and flashmob with us if you're in Manchester!

Things and stuff
It's been an interesting, extended weekend. On Saturday I headed up to Hebden Bridge to check out some photos from AJ's Driving Blind book that are being exibited in a lovely organic cafe. The prints were good, although the added text underneath meant they weren't as large as I would have liked to see, and the food was yummy. I'd never been to Hebden Bridge before, but it was exactly what I thought it would be. Like Beech Road in Chorlton but more 'grown up'. Plenty of happy people with dreads, Birkenstocks and hemp t-shirts buying organic produce and browsing in cute independent shops. Nice.On the way there and back I listened to some of the Live 8 coverage on Radio One, so decided to join Topper in Manchester's Exchange Square to watch it on the big screen. Despite alcohol being banned from the area, the square was packed and there was a lively party atmosphere. I rattled off a few shots on my ickle digital camera which can be found over at flickr, if you'e interested.
Today was spent finishing off the stuff for my darkroom photography course that had to be handed in - I took a day off work for it. My workbook didn't take long, but cutting the window mounts, that I was determined to do myself, took a few hours. The 45 degree angle cutter I bought certainly paid off though as the finished product looked fantastic (even if I do say so myself). Just as well I've signed up for the AS level course starting in September. I've really got the bug now!
