International Women's Day

There I was, thinking I would be doing nothing to celebrate International Women's Day, when I actually had something quite big planned. I attended the first ever Honorary Degree Ceremony at King's College London where two of the three honorary graduates were women, one of whom was the first and only (so far) female Law Lord. The Rt Hon Baroness Hale of Richmond is described by King's as "an acclaimed and highly influential member of the legal profession and of the Judiciary... the first woman and the youngest person ever to be appointed to the Law Commission, in 1984". As the author of 'Women and the Law' and 'The Family, Law and Society', and a speaker on subjects such as 'Is Equality the end of Marriage?', it was pointed out in one of the speeches at the ceremony that Baroness Hale was not a favourite of the Daily Mail - I liked her already. After her 'response on behalf of the graduates', I liked her even more. It's not every day you get to be in the company of greatness, especially not in such grand surroundings.

Kiss me, Tony

First Torchwood, now Skins - television keeps getting attractive men to snog each other for my entertainment. I keep wondering whether or not it is OK to like this, after all, it's just titillating TV for a generation now too used to seeing women kissing each other to find it truly diverting*. If it means that the general public start to view a kiss between men as no different to a kiss between member of the opposite sex, then there will have been a point to it after all, but I reckon the programme makers are just trying to shock. Whatever the reason, I think I need to watch some intellectual television now to redress the balance and attempt to up my IQ once more. But are there any educational shows left though, which aren't designed for children? I think I'll have to scour the TV guide again...

*OK, perhaps not if you're a heterosexual man.
