Overheard...

This morning, due to a nasty fire, I was unable to get the train to work and so ended up on a rather slow moving bus, headed for the nearest underground station. Whilst stuck in traffic near Charlton, a woman stood near the rear doors turned to the man sat in front of me and said, "Mr Sutcliffe, I'd like to thank you for sacking me. You played right into my hands." Apparently she had never worked for such an ignorant pig and was glad to be free of the place. She left the bus at the next stop (after quite a few minutes of uncomfortable silence), and then the ex-boss started to dish the dirt to the woman sat next to him. I'm not sure I heard him correctly, but I thought he said the ex-employee had been violent towards other members of staff. Certainly livened up what would otherwise have been a rather dull (and long) journey.

Sunshine weekend

After two beautiful days of sunshine, is there a better way to spend a couple of hours of your evening than sat in a darkened room watching a film that attempts to show our nearest star 'up close'? Well, despite the upbeat title, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's latest film is decidedly dark, so it was a bit more of a contrast than you might imagine from the sunny day we'd left behind. However, any fan of huge paranoid sci-fi movies will not be disappointed in this beautiful, yet scary film. The downright odd ending appears to be all that seperated it from a five-star review from both Empire and The Guardian, and I can see why, but it still goes onto my "must buy the DVD" list. Not only would I gladly watch the film again, but the extras on any special edition release are going to be quite something.

My only other cinema report from recent weeks is, if you have to see 300, do it at an IMAX screen. The plot is pants (a bit like the costumes), so you need the sheer size of that massive screen to take your mind off it. But, after a trawl of Apple's movie trailers website, I have come up with a short list of what is it we're looking forward to next. 28 Weeks Later could be a worthy successor to the awesome 28 Days Later, but could also be utter poop. Day Watch could be the 'Matrix Reloaded' to Night Watch's 'Matrix'. Colour Me Kubrick looks quirky, Grindhouse looks ridiculous (yet also unmissable), but there is one film that I really must cancel everything else to go and see. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you... The Simpsons Movie.
